This is a compulsory exam for all ANN and AFN students. University regulations require the Department to examine every student at the end of their linguistics studies in an oral exam in front of a committee.
The prerequisites for the exam are slightly different for ANN and AFN students, as set out below:

Alternatively they can opt to answer 3 questions, one from each subject covered (Phonology, Syntax and History of English) drawn in the exam from pre-published lists, which can be found at http://seas3.elte.hu/seas/studies/exams/AFN-259_questions.html for AFN students or at http://seas3.elte.hu/seas/studies/exams/ANN-259_questions.html for ANN students. In this case the student's mark will be decided by the committee based on their exam performance.
Students should register for the exam on the ETR. They should also complete and hand in a form which can be obtained from the Department office (220) or downloaded from the following:
Please fill out this form fully, including the page and line numbers in your index for the appropriate courses as this will help us to complete the exam as quickly as possible.
At the time of the exams I get a lot of students writing to me with the same sorts of questions. Here are the answers to the most common of them.
Q If I opt for the projected mark, do I still have to turn up for the exam?
A Yes. Opting for the projected mark is not opting out of the exam. We are still required to orally examine every student, which means that you have to turn up personally and sit before the committee.
Q If I opt for the projected mark, can someone else bring my index to get my mark entered?
A No. For the same reason as above.
Q My last linguistics exam from the list of pre-requisites is after the date of the Szigorlat, can I take the Szigorlat before?
A No. The 'pre' in 'pre-requisite' has a quite uncontroversial meaning. If there is no Szigorlat scheduled after your last exam, you will have to take the Szigorlat in the following semester.
