How computers can damage your prose?
The more expert you are at writing with a computer, the more your prose is likely to suffer. The same result occurs, the more inexpert you are. A computer screen flatters you with the illusion that you are labouring over style and content when, with the press of a key, you delete words or transpose sentences. As you find the point on screen to which you intend to move a misplaced word, and then drop the word into place and watch the rest of the paragraph automatically rearrange itself, you can congratulate yourself on your marksmanship and control. The writer’s task has never felt more challenging: the instruments for accomplishing the task never more responsive and luxurious. But while you convince yourself that you employ all your power and concentration on the challenge of your prose, deep within you, unknown even to yourself, an enthralled teenager is playing PacMan.
The craft of writing has little in common with the craft of winning a video game, but the computer encourages the illusion that the two are essentially identical. When you write and revise on paper, the actions you can perform are infinitely various and subtle. You can write notes in the margins, draw arrows to remind you of echoes to be removed or parallels to be emphasized. You can leave cues for the next stage of revision by circling doubtful phrases or writing large or small question marks anywhere on the page. You can deploy any idiosyncratic or conventional set of proof-reading marks.
When you write at a computer or play a video game, the
actions you can perform are far more dramatic but are rigidly limited by
the rules built into the machine. You can obliterate in an instant a paragraph
or an alien spacecraft, but you can only use the weapons provided for you
by a programmer. You can manoeuvre a phrase across the screen or a jet
fighter under the bridge, but the act itself comes to seem more significant
and exciting than any purpose it could possibly achieve. Experts can at
least take pleasure in winning the game. Those who find the computer difficult
to master, who hesitate over menus and panic seeing unfamiliar messages,
are distracted from the task of choosing and arranging their words by the
more frustrating task of persuading their words to appear where they belong
on screen or at their printer.
a szövegszerkesztéshez. A számítógép
Megtaláljuk a képernyõnek
az egész bekezdés automatikusan átrendezõdik;
ekkor gratulálunk magunknak, hogy milyen jól céloztunk
és milyen teljes ellenõrzést gyakorlunk a szöveg
felett.
Milyen mértékben tudják a számítógépek írásunk stílusát megrontani?
Minél gyakorlottabban ír valaki a számítógép
segítségével, annál valószínûbb,
hogy az a stílusán meg fog érzõdni. Ugyanez
történik a gyakorlatlanabb illetõk esetében is.
A számítógép képernyõje azzal
a megvalósításhoz szükséges céleszközök
